Online Media Production
2021-2022 | Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Media and Cultural Production | HKU Space international college in partnership with UOW Bristol (University of the West of England)
This module will provide with a historical and theoretical introduction as well as a practical training in online media production. In lectures, students will explore the cultural contexts of interactive online media production and develop methods for describing, analysing and criticising a diverse range of online media forms and practices. We will discuss the global, ethical and transcultural dimensions of social media, AI and big data.
Visualising Culture
2021-2022 | Postgraduate Diploma in Media and Cultural Critique | HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education
The main objective of this module is to introduce students to the key meanings and structures of visual culture and thus help them investigate the ways in which cultural meanings are articulated, interpreted and communicated through different forms of visual-cultural practices, such as films, photographs, advertisements and museum displays etc. This module will also introduce a range of visual research methods and media production techniques which develop students’ capacities in both analyzing and creating visual-oriented projects.
Visual Communication

This subject allows students to conceptualize and design visual communication artifacts using creative and practical skills relevant to a range of design genres and media. It develops an awareness and understanding of graphic design principles and visual culture(s). Due to the pandemic, new software was introduced | GIMP, Vectr, and Inkscape.

This unit introduces the critical arena of visual communication, giving students the skills to critically interpret the visual images which surround us. Multiple sites of social life are being radically transformed by visual communication; social media, lifestyle applications, security systems, medical diagnostics, business and technologies using data and statistics all employ visual images to communicate large volumes of information. Increasingly invasive regimes of imaging have wide ranging consequences, both social and political.
Multimedia Storytelling

In Multimedia Storytelling, student-centred learning and teaching activities are designed to enable students to understand fundamental theories and concepts of storytelling, develop their generic skills, and address their career aspirations in the field of creative media and communication. It aims to provide students with a taste of the working environment across creative media and industry sectors and to instil their passion for a further career in creative media or related fields.
Semiotic

This module aims to introduce the principles of semiology for image builders which enable students to interpret the language of signs. It also equips them with the ability to manipulate effectively the concealed codes in words and image compositions for conveying messages to target audience.
Innovative Digital Communication

This course introduces the innovative world of blogging by exposing students to an extensive level of digital communication. Students will learn the concepts and techniques for producing high-quality content with add-on knowledge on social and ethical issues.
This course aims to develop students’ ability to write innovatively and produce content in digital environments. It will also expose students to a variety of Web 2.0 online tools and platforms that support writing online such as websites, blogs, media narratives and digital storytelling (i.e. audio and video essays, podcasts, and wikis).

Collaborative Production Workshop
This subject explores the skills, strategies and professional expectations of collaborative media production. An examination of relevant principles, practices and industry case studies provides the basis for teams of students with different media production expertise to collaborate in the development of common projects.

Web Design and
Interactive Media
This is a higher level multimedia and interactive design course, in which case studies will focus on both the spatial design and the sequential-interactive-narrative aspect of modern screen-based media, such as web site, mobile app, virtual tour, augmented reality as well as games.
The course provides students with aesthetic frameworks for the appreciation of spatial and sequential design in dynamic media, and for developing a personal style in interactive media design and informational communication. Students will gain hands-on experience in designing and prototyping an interactive media project or an interactive application/game for digital marketing and communication.

Corporate Identity and Branding

Branding is more than a logo and a set of stationery. Branding is a design system that helps clients create, manage and promote their brands. On completion of this project, students should be able to have an understanding of how brand strategy, design, naming, interactive and research can create brand power.
