  • The Historical Background of Instagram: A Guide for Successful Digital Marketing

Instagram, launched in October 2010  by Kevin Systrom  and Mike Krieger , began as a photo-sharing app focused on simplicity and creativity. Initially available only on iOS, the platform quickly gained traction due to its user-friendly interface and unique filters that transformed ordinary photos into visually captivating content. In 2012, Instagram was acquired by Facebook (now Meta) for $1 billion, marking a significant milestone in its journey. This acquisition fueled rapid growth and innovation, including the introduction of Android support, video sharing (2013), and Stories (2016)—a feature inspired by Snapchat that became a cornerstone for engagement. Today, Instagram has evolved into a powerful tool for digital marketing. With over 2 billion monthly active users, it offers businesses a unique platform to connect with audiences through visually driven content. Features like Instagram Shopping, Reels, and advertising tools provide unparalleled opportunities for brands to showcase products, tell stories, and drive conversions. By understanding Instagram’s history and leveraging its diverse features, marketers can create impactful campaigns that resonate with their audience, driving brand awareness, engagement, and sales. What is Instagram? Instagram is a vibrant social networking platform that celebrates the power of imagery. Upon signing up, you create a unique profile, sharing a piece of yourself with the world. The platform invites you to express yourself through captivating photos accompanied by thoughtful descriptions and hashtags. Users can capture moments and upload them instantly to the app on their mobile devices or the website on their computers. Each photo can be transformed with a title, labels, hashtags, and filters that enhance its beauty. Moreover, you can share your visual stories across other networks like Facebook and Twitter. By sharing your creativity and experiences, you inspire friends and fellow users to connect with your journey on your profile. Key Milestones in Instagram’s History: Early Growth (2010-2011):  Within two months of its launch, Instagram attracted 1 million users, reaching 10 million by the end of 2011. Facebook Acquisition (2012):  In April 2012, Facebook (now Meta) acquired Instagram for $1 billion, boosting its development and expanding its reach. Video Sharing (2013):  Instagram introduced 15-second video uploads, competing with platforms like Vine and broadening its creative appeal. Stories (2016):  Inspired by Snapchat, Instagram launched Stories, allowing users to share temporary photos and videos. This feature became a major driver of engagement. Reels and Shopping (2020):  To compete with TikTok, Instagram introduced Reels for short-form videos. Instagram Shopping also became a key feature, enabling e-commerce to be directly integrated into the app. Today, Instagram has over 2 billion monthly active users  globally and continues to innovate with tools for creators, brands, and individuals. Its focus on visual storytelling and engagement has solidified its position as a leading platform in the digital landscape. When operating the Skin18 business, Instagram was one of the most used social media channels while running a multi-channel digital marketing approach. For an online skincare retail shop that ran for 3-5 years, there were 2130 posts and 6192 followers (Skin18 used to have 10k organic followers). Here are some Engagement Strategies with Instagram: Tips for Success Create High-Quality Content: Use eye-catching visuals and compelling captions to grab attention while focusing on a cohesive aesthetic that aligns with your brand. • Is Facebook still the best platform out there?

Content written in 2017, updated on 2024 The landscape of electronic media is in a constant state of flux, with trends evolving rapidly. A social networking site is an online platform where users can create profiles, share their thoughts and connect with other users. Traditionally, people use social networks to stay in touch with family and friends and connect with people with similar interests. These platforms are rich in features, enabling users to create, share, and evaluate a wide range of content, from thoughts (status) to photos, opinions, and news. Four of the most popular social media networks worldwide in 2024 are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, WeChat, Telegram, Snapchat, doujin, Facebook Messenger, etc. Is Facebook still the best platform out there? Undoubtedly, Facebook has emerged as a pivotal platform for online communication. It has transcended its original purpose, becoming a cornerstone for marketing, advertising, and other interactions for countless companies worldwide. Its role as a source of communication and online interaction is continually evolving. Facebook is undeniably a social networking giant, shaping the way people share their communication. Here is a list of the historical development of Facebook: 2004: Facebook was launched in a Harvard dormitory. 2005: The name was changed to "facebook.com". 2006: Facebook opened to the public. 2012: Facebook went public and was valued at $104 billion. 2012: Facebook became the first online service to reach 1 billion monthly active users. 2018: Facebook had 2.32 billion users. 2023: Facebook had 2.11 billion active monthly users. Here are some updates on growing and declining platforms: Growth of new platforms : Lemon8, Tumblr, and TikTok have grown the most since 2023. The decline of other platforms , such as Reddit, X/Twitter, and LinkedIn, saw the most significant decrease in usage. Voice-first platforms : Airchat, launched in April 2024, focuses on voice-first public messaging. Decentralized social networks use blockchain technology to prioritize user control and data privacy. Since its launch in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard roommates, Facebook has been used by billions worldwide. Before Facebook, the world experienced Friendster (2003) and MySpace (2003). Facebook  is a widely used online social network program whose original purpose was to allow people to share information with friends and family. From a business perspective, It is an effective source of advertising and marketing that allows brands and services to link and promote them. This is a website and a good marketing strategy to complement online marketing techniques, perfect as an online resource to offer services and products. Integrating social media platforms into a business strategy created many opportunities for the sales and marketing of online product selling. In contrast, it also creates challenges due to the increasing number of online competitors and the need for the brand's professional fact-checking issues for content verification. With its unique features, such as targeted advertising, Facebook has emerged as a powerful tool for online social marketing. For educators, it provides a valuable learning platform, enabling them to reach a wider audience and engage with students innovatively. Its ability to facilitate targeted advertising and marketing strategies has made it a go-to platform for reaching specific customer segments. Facebook allows people to put their thoughts freely. It is much better for the organization and will enable acquiring knowledge from people who usually do not separate you otherwise. All use this, not just members of athletic individuals, authors, celebrities, and organizations. It is a platform of open social networks. Here, people can honestly review products and services, guiding the marketing industry to an integrated marketing strategy by blending in with potential clients' personal lives and the commercial products they are using. For me, Facebook  is a social media site because it connects with family members, friends, colleagues, organizations or communities with the same interests and hobbies. It is a big part of an individual's connectivity among friends and family, potential clientele, and classmates or colleagues from the past. Even though many media scholars are predicting the decline of this social media platform, for example, researchers at Princeton University ( https://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.4208v1 & https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jan/22/facebook-princeton-researchers-infectious-disease ) predicted that Facebook would lose 80% of its peak user base within three years. However, Facebook's monthly active user count increased by 14% year-on-year in 2017 instead. ( https://www.statista.com/statistics/264810/number-of-monthly-active-facebook-users-worldwide ) In 2017, 67% of the US population over 12 used Facebook. That number dropped to 62% in 2018 and 61% in 2019. ( https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/facebook-lost-15-million-us-users-in-the-past-two-years-report-says ) . According to Edison Research data published Wednesday, Facebook has an estimated 15 million fewer US users in the year 2020 than it did in 2017. By the end of 2020, Facebook's monthly active user base had grown to 2.8 billion. ( https://www.statista.com/chart/10047/facebooks-monthly-active-users ). Here are some reliable statistical data about Facebook's users to prove that Facebook Keeps On Growing. Year Number of Facebook users (Source: Meta) Annual change 2012 1.06 billion +24.97% 2013 1.23 billion +16.29% 2014 1.39 billion +13.44% 2015 1.59 billion +14.21% 2016 1.86 billion +16.91% 2017 2.13 billion +14.46% 2018 2.32 billion +8.97% 2019 2.50 billion +7.67% 2020 2.80 billion +11.97% 2021 2.91 billion +4.11% 2022 2.96 billion +1.75% 2023 3.07 billion +3.44% (Source: https://www.oberlo.com/statistics/how-many-users-does-facebook-have ) As we observe the shifts in the social media landscape, it's clear that technologies, including Facebook, have their seasons of popularity. While Facebook may be less popular with teenagers than other platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, Twitch, Discord, and TikTok, it remains a significant force in the digital world. Despite the cost of maintaining a Facebook account without active use, it's important to remember that Facebook is not going down without a fight.  If it can innovate to meet the needs of its users, especially the younger demographic, it has the potential to remain a significant force well beyond 2024.

  • Evolution of Telecommunication: Impact of 3G Technology

Hutchison Telecom (HK) Ltd Senior Multimedia Producer / Senior Multimedia Producer Taking part in the launch of 3G phones at Hutchison 3 and later working on the Nokia N series were important milestones in my career. The 3G phone launch was a big step forward in mobile communication technology, allowing users to transfer data faster and access the internet, stream videos, and use advanced applications seamlessly on mobile devices. Being part of this initiative gave me valuable experience with cutting-edge telecom technologies, mobile network infrastructure, and the complexities of delivering new services to the public. After the 3G phone launch, my work on the Nokia N series expanded my technical skills. The N series, a product that influenced the mobile industry, pushed the boundaries of mobile multimedia capabilities with advanced cameras, music players, and internet connectivity. Working on such innovative devices deepened my understanding of mobile hardware, software integration, and the importance of user-centric design in creating consumer technology products. Both experiences significantly contributed to my technical and professional growth. They exposed me to the fast-paced evolution of the mobile industry and equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and contribute to future advancements in mobile communication technologies. About Hutchison Telecommunications, from Orange to 3HK Hutchison Telecommunications, a division of Hong Kong-based multinational conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings, demonstrated remarkable strategic foresight in the evolution of the telecommunications industry, particularly in Hong Kong. The transition from Orange  to 3HK , a significant chapter in Hutchison’s history, was a well-planned strategic shift towards becoming a mobile broadband and 3G services leader. Orange Era (Pre-2002) Before the rebranding, Hutchison Telecom operated under Orange  in Hong Kong. Orange was a well-established player in the local telecom market, known for offering 2G mobile services. During this period, the focus was on providing reliable voice services, SMS, and basic mobile data capabilities. As one of the leading telecom providers, Orange built a solid customer base, but the emergence of new technologies called for an evolution in branding and service offerings. Rebranding to 3HK (2002 and Beyond) In 2002, Hutchison boldly rebranded its mobile service from Orange  to 3HK  (also known as  3  or Three  in international markets), marking its entry into the 3G era. This shift was a name change and a major technological leap to revolutionise mobile communication. 3  was one of the world’s first brands to offer third-generation (3G) mobile services, providing significantly faster data speeds, enhanced internet access, and the ability to support multimedia services like video calls, mobile TV, and online gaming. The rebranding to 3HK  was part of Hutchison’s global rollout of the 3G network under the  3  brand, with similar initiatives launched in the UK, Italy, Australia, and other markets. This move positioned Hutchison as an innovator in the mobile broadband industry, mainly focusing on data-driven services, which became the foundation for the future of mobile communications. Impact and Legacy The introduction of 3G services by Hutchison, following the transition from Orange  to 3HK , significantly transformed the telecom landscape in Hong Kong. Hutchison’s early investment in 3G infrastructure paid off, giving the company a competitive edge as consumer demand for data services surged. The 3  brand became synonymous with mobile internet, multimedia applications, and mobile broadband, appealing especially to tech-savvy users. Over time, 3HK  expanded its services to 4G and 5G technologies, maintaining its reputation for innovation and leadership in mobile communications in Hong Kong. The legacy of Hutchison’s strategic move from Orange  to 3HK  not only set the stage for continued advancements in mobile technology but also inspired the industry, solidifying its place as a critical player in the global telecom industry.

  • The Shutdown of Google Plus?

Google+ was shut down for consumers on April 2, 2019. Despite its eventual decline, Google + was a user-friendly and intuitive social network. Its straightforward interface and short learning curve made it a popular choice. The platform was not without its unique features, one of the most notable being the introduction of 'circles '. This feature redefined the concept of 'friends' on social networks, allowing users to categorize and separate their contacts into different groups. Google, the search engine, launched Google+ in year 2012. With its "natural-born" search engine optimization capability, Google+ has easily climbed to the top and become one of the most popular social media platforms, comparable with Facebook, Instagram, and other popular platforms from 2011 to 2019. What happened to Google+ Google+ was launched in 2011 to compete with Facebook, but it was widely seen as one of Google's biggest failures. Google+ was the company's fourth foray into social networking, following Google Buzz (introduced in 2010, retired in 2011), Google Friend Connect (introduced in 2008, retired in March 2012), and Orkut (introduced in 2004, retired in September 2014[6]). ===== 2011 : Google+ was initially launched on June 28, 2011. Two weeks after the launch, it had 10 million users. According to Larry Page , in October 2011, the service had 40 million users. At the end of 2011, Google+ had 90 million users. 2013 : In October 2013, approximately 540 million monthly active users used the social layer by interacting with Google+'s enhanced properties, such as Gmail, the +1 button, and YouTube comments. Even though Google+'s performance was skyrocketing, its user engagement was lower than its competitors. ComScore ( https://www.comscore.com/ ) estimated that the average time spent on the site during January 2012 was only 3.3 minutes, while on Facebook, this metric was over 136 times greater, at 7.5 hours. 2015 : Three Google executives oversaw the service, which underwent substantial changes that led to a redesign in November 2015. 2018: Data breach In 2018, Google discovered a security flaw that exposed the private data of up to 500,000 users. The data included names, email addresses, occupations, gender, and age. Google delayed disclosing the vulnerability for six months, which damaged user trust. Why it happened: Google+ was shut down after a bug in its software exposed user data, affecting up to 500,000 users. Google knew about the issue in March but didn't disclose it. 2019: Google+ was shut down for consumers. The Google+ developer API was discontinued on March 7, 2019, and Google+ was shut down for business and personal use on April 2, 2019. 2020 : On July 6, 2020, Google transitioned from Google+ to Google Currents. ===== What happened to the data? All content from consumer Google+ accounts and pages was deleted. What happened to Google Workspace accounts: Google+ is still available for use within Google Workspace accounts for work or school. What happened to other Google products? The shutdown did not affect Other Google products, such as Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive, and YouTube. What happened to links to plus.google.com: Links to plus.google.com were automatically redirected to currents.google.com. Here are some of the reasons for the shutdown according to Google: Low user engagement: Google cited low usage as a reason for shutting down Google+. (Reference: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/01/closure-google-plus-everything-you-need-to-know ) Low user engagement: Google noted that 90% of user sessions on Google+ lasted less than five seconds. (Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google%2B ) Failure to achieve broad adoption : Google struggled to gain widespread adoption from consumers and developers.  (Reference: https://slate.com/technology/2018/10/google-plus-the-ineffectual-social-network-was-finally-felled-by-a-security-bug.html ) Focus on enterprise efforts: Google wanted to focus on developing new features for businesses (Reference: https://support.google.com/chat/answer/14087009 ) Google+ has not been the only discontinued product throughout the years. Google's vision is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. The company's vision statement is to access the world's information with one click. The vision statement and company culture strongly encourage innovation with new visions and ideas from various business levels - operational, management and strategic. As digital media users, we always look at the bright side of innovation by exploring new tools based on invented technology, such as using Blockchain technology for NFT (Non-Figable Token). In other words, innovation encourages risk-taking and continuous learning from errors. Here are some of the failure examples of Google products other than Google+ Google Pay: A payment app that was shut down in the US in June and replaced by Google Wallet Google Podcasts: A podcast hosting platform and app that was shut down in April and replaced by YouTube Music Keen: A Pinterest-style platform with ML recommendations that was shut down in March Google Stadia: A service that was shut down on January 18, 2023 Google Code Jam: An international programming competition that was discontinued in February 2023 Works with Nest: A program that linked third-party smart home devices with Nest products Playground AR: A product that was discontinued Focals by North: A product that was discontinued CallJoy: A virtual customer service phone agent for small businesses that was discontinued Google Photos Print: A product that was discontinued Pigeon Transit: A crowdsourced transit app experiment that was discontinued Google OnHub: A series of residential wireless routers that were powered by Google software Google Surveys: A business product that facilitated customized market research YouTube Go: An app that made YouTube easier to access on mobile devices in emerging markets Google Chrome Apps: A service that was discontinued Google has a reputation for discontinuing products more than any other company.
